Stone Repointing & Façade Repair

Lime repointing, stone replacement and façade restoration using rope access.

Edinburgh's stone buildings need breathable lime mortar. Cement pointing traps moisture and destroys stone. Our stonemasons are also rope access technicians. We cut out failed mortar, repoint in NHL lime, and replace damaged stone indents — all while suspended. Conservation officers regularly approve our methods for listed buildings.

/ Key Benefits

Lime mortar specialists working from ropes — rare combination

No scaffold licences or street closures required

Stone indents matched by geological type and colour

Full photographic records for conservation compliance

/ Frequently Asked

Why is cement pointing bad for old stone?

Cement is impermeable and harder than sandstone. Trapped moisture freezes and expands, causing the stone face to delaminate — a process called 'blowing'. Lime mortar breathes and flexes, preserving the stone.

Do you work on listed buildings?

Yes. We prepare heritage statements, method statements, and work to Historic Environment Scotland guidelines. Our rope access methods are routinely approved where scaffold would damage fragile fabric.
